Among my favorites is the genus Hippeastrum, belong to the Amaryllidaceae family, though this is a bit of a misnomer. These stunning plants, with their large, trumpet-shaped flowers and strapping leaves, never fail to bring a touch of the tropics to my home and garden.

The name Hippeastrum originates from the Greek words “hippeus,” meaning knight, and “astron,” meaning star, aptly describing the flower’s shape. It was the renowned botanist William Herbert who bestowed this moniker upon the genus in the 19th century, distinguishing it from the true Amaryllis of South Africa.

A Diverse and Dazzling Genus

Hippeastrum is a diverse genus boasting around 90 species and over 600 hybrids and cultivars. These bulbous perennials are native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, from Mexico south to Argentina, and even some Caribbean islands. They thrive in warm climates and well-drained soil, making them a popular choice for gardens and indoor containers alike.

Hippeastrum abatinguara Campos-Rocha & A.S.Medeiros

Hippeastrum aglaiae (A.Cast.)
